Hart Davis Hart Wine Co., the leading wine auction house in the U.S., hosted a two-day June auction over the weekend, An Important East Coast Single Cellar and An Auction of Finest & Rarest Wines, bringing in $4.3 million against a pre-sale estimate of $2.6-3.9 million. Bidders from five continents participated, bringing over 72% of lots to sell at or above the high end of the estimates, and once again 100% of lots were sold.
Friday offered An Important East Coast Single Cellar (lots 1-64) which brought in $1.5 million alone. Large formats of La Tâche, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti performed particularly well. A single jeroboam (lot 31, est. $20,000-30,000) and a methuselah (lot 32, est. $55,000-85,000) of the 1999 vintage each sold for record prices of $45,410 and $107,550 respectively. A jeroboam of the 2001 vintage (lot 36, est. $15,000-22,000) also recorded a new high
bringing in $31,070. A pristine 1990 DRC Assortment (lot 50, est. $50,000-75,000) was offered and saw great interest, selling for $95,600. Following the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was a rare offering of La Romanée from Comte Liger-Belair. Three bottles of the 2010 vintage garnered $20,315 (lot 62, est. $11,000-17,000) while a single magnum of the 2012 brought in $11,950 (lot 64, est. $6,500-9,500).
Following this special single cellar, an array of wines from around the globe came across the auction block. The auction house saw good interest for Bordeaux with 3 bottles of 1959 Château Latour selling for $11,352 (lot 65, est. $4,500-6,500); 2 bottles of 1964 Château Pétrus brought in $7,170 (lot 149, est. $3,500-5,500); and 12 bottles of 1990 Château Haut-Brion garnered $28,680 (lot 157, est. $14,000-20,000).
Burgundy demand was strong with top prices for a single bottle of 1969 Vosne-Romanée, Maison Leroy selling for $1,195 (lot 946, est. $300-450) and 1 bottle of 1982 La Romanée, Bouchard Pére et Fils bringing in $956 (lot 947, est. $450-650). Additionally, a full case of 1995 Vosne-Romanée, Beaux Monts, Domaine Leroy sold for $21,510 (lot 819, est. $12,00-18,000); 3 bottles of 2001 Grands-Echézeaux, René Engel garnered $4,451 (lot 834, est. $1,600-2,400); and 1 magnum of 2006 Romanée-St-Vivant, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti brought in $5,019 (lot 1098, est. $2,400-3,500).
Rhône has gained attention with strong bidding on lots such as 4 bottles of 1978 Hermitage, La Chapelle, Paul Jaboulet Aîné which brought in $7,767 (lot 168, est. $3,500-5,500) and a full case of 1991 Côte Rôtie, Côte Blonde, René Rostaing sold for $4,182 (lot 896, est. $2,000-3,000).
Paul Hart, CEO, commented "We are so thankful to our bidders and consignors who helped make this auction so special. It's always a pleasure to offer such exceptional wine and to have the market receive it enthusiastically."
Hart Davis Hart’s next auction will be a distinguished single-owner collection hosted in late July. The auction house is currently accepting consignments for upcoming fall auctions.
