  • Day One of En Primeur: 2023 Vintage "Monday April 22nd was a perfect day to taste young wines. The air was clean, the sun was out, and the barometric pressure was high – all conducive to the young samples behaving. My colleague Jacob and I tasted at several top Châteaux in the morning and then went to a large Union des Grands Crus tasting in the afternoon. The tale of the growing season was similar at each of the Medoc estates we visited this morning: rough start with mildew problems. Some cool weather until August then lovely warmth with enough rain to keep the maturation moving along. Harvests generally began in mid-September and finished in early October. Overall, yields were high but not excessive. Alcohols were in the 13-13.5% range, and nothing seemed hot. This seems to be a strong white vintage based on the performance of Domaine de Chevalier, Pape Clement, Malarctic Lagraviere, and a truly amazing Smith Haut Lafitte. The wines are full and rich with lovely acidity and fruit. I feel they are a clear step up from the 2021’s and 2022’s, neither of which are poor examples of wine!" -Todd Hess, HDH Senior Retail Advisor Stay tuned for particulars on plenty of our favorite estates. • The Cities Project is a non-profit collab between local universities and Chicago Public Schools, creating mentorship programs based on youth empowerment and positive change. The people behind this program rock... as do the students. . Had a blast supporting fundraising efforts this past weekend with a live auction at the Green Line Barber Lounge. Dr. Grayson Holmbeck, long-time advocate and Professor of Psychology, told us, “Thanks to Paul Hart’s extraordinary auctioneer skills and his commitment to The Cities Project, the fundraiser was a great success! To say that we couldn’t have done it without him would be a huge understatement!” . Whether through auctioneering expertise or other methods, we love supporting organizations out there doing good work. Check out The Cities Project online.

  • We asked Dan Stensland-Bos to announce April's Auction of Fine & Rare Wines, which opened for early bidding today. Dan is our Senior Inspection Specialist, so he knows this auction inside and out. A few of his favorite lots: 743: 2015 Valentini Trebbiano - "This rather rare wine is likely to be the most intense, complex example of Trebbiano one can find. Ages rather well, too." 931: 1834 Barbeito Malvazia - "Pre-Phylloxera Madeira is becoming incredibly rare, and those released by the Barbeito family are among the best. A true treasure." 2024: 1995 Krug Clos de Mesnil - "Krug is by far my favorite Champagne house, '95 was a fantastic vintage. Clos de Mesnil is a tiny walled vineyard producing some of the best Chardonnay in the region." Bid.auctions.com #hdhauctions #winecollector #finewine #hdhwine
